Hi Myles and all who are reading or will eventually read this. I hope it’s a thread that people will take seriously, because it’s been bothering me (and if I’m right, most of you will agree with me too on this) that the selection of SOTDs (Skin Of The Days) has become extremely slack of late.
Not saying anything against you Myles or whoever actually does the selection process, but we’d like to know exactly how much time is spent in selecting these SOTDs. Is it based on the number of comments a skin gets? Because if so, I think the whole selection system needs to be seriously reviewed. SOTDs are becoming shockingly under standard nowadays, and it’s really putting lots of people (me for instance) off from coming to blogskins.com because of the SOTD skins produced.
To finish off this little rant/hopefully enlightening suggestion, I hope the selection system of SOTDs will be reviewed so we’ll keep up the standards and in doing so, attract more people to the site! That’s precisely why they’re called Skin Of The Day, because they deserve recognition and praise of peoples’ hard work, not just same crudely edited image plopped in the middle of the screen.

its the number of people who likes the skin i think.
normally an SOTD has a great no. of 5 stars or faves.
so its not about how the machines work.
maybe its about the downloader's idea of the blogskin he/she wants.
some people may like simple.
some may like elaborate.
some may like twit skins.
SOTD might depend on what the users like.
its not really standard drop, just that nowadays the style you don't like has been influential to a lot of people?

The reason is because everyone gives 5-star ratings and no one really dares to rate anything lower than that. So in the end both crappy and good skins get about the same ratings. Also, amateurs tend to create multiple accounts and self-rate, self-download, and self-favourite their own skins.

hmm yeah .
i agree .
the previous SOTDs are really not that fab .
while some really great ones are still out there , un-SOTD .
if you get what i mean .
if you compare the SOTDs from previous years ,
this year's SOTDs are really bad ,
no offence to those whose skins are SOTD .
some are really great ,
but some are just really a joke .
no offence .

i agree. the standards of SOTDs droped shockingly. i mean, there are better ones out there! why are thy not chosen, instead the chosen ones are much more 'suckier' den the normal ones. ~.~
like the one on the 11th nov, i dun even think it deserves a SOTD!!
if everyone dont dare to grade the skins lower & everyone gets a 5star, whats the point of having this SOTD section & the ratings thingy.. -.- i think blogskinners also have to accept the fact that some of their own skins are not exactly very welcomed by the public. & also accept that thy have a 3 star or even lower ratings. IF ur skin is really nice, everyone will giv a 5star !

Though that skin may not be the best skin of the day
But i think that it isn't very bad after all,
though it may be a bit too simple/plain.
Or is it you that are having sour grapes?

FYI, there are a few users out there finding it surprising dat it got SOTD too.
u can say dat my opinion's wrong but u cant say im having sour grapes or wadeva.
well, im just stating the fact. ppl's opinion differ, like i said. no offence. it's just my point of view. (:

I agree with this, too. I don't make great blogskins personally, cos I suck at the coding part, but to be honest, many of the SOTDs recently seen, their images are a lot worse than what even I can do.
No offence though. Some are really great and several skins I've used for my own blog. But I think I saw a lot moregreat skins in old SOTDs.

although i don't make skin.. but yea some SOTDs dont deserve it..
and i know why peoples doesn't dare to rate them down..
it's all because if you rate them down you will need to give a constructive reason..
some people they don't know what's wrong with that skin and what the blogskinner should improve but they just feel like this skin not worth 5 stars.
and if you rate them down without writing down why they will scold you..
or even if you are giving a honest rate you will get scolded too..
and if you give a comment just with a word 'nice' and a 5 stars rating the blogskinner will scold you too for giving such a useless comment.
who wants to get scolded like this..
so they will be really fake and rate them 5 stars..

yar agreed. standared has dropped. but i think there should not be any bias-ness between ppl using adobe photoshop and paint for doing their skins. i'm not saying that ppl shud stop using photoshop or wad , but i've seen some really nice skins done with paint. oh ya , i use adobe for some skins so don't say i hate ppl using adobe. -i hope i did not say anythn to offend anyone- {if i did...SORRY okaes...?}

Everyone rates 5 stars because they're afraid that if they rate 4.5 stars to person A, person A will rate 4.5 stars back to your skin even if you really deserve it.
That is why.

why not define sotd like this, review both comments, no. of downloads and the skin to ensure a good standard. i know this takes a lot of time, so maybe have a skin of the week? xD
please change the way to define sotd quickly! i'm going insane with all the horrible sotd (of course some REALLY deserve sotd, but others... =.=`)

i am really shocked at the quality of SOTDs (not all but some) nowadays, not that i am criticizing any, but seriously.. (no offence though)

There was a point in history where SoTDs aren't up to standard. I can see history repeating itself again. There are many good skinners out there. Hmm, I wonder how the algorithm actually works.

i agree with detonatedlove♥. about the different people having different tastes and liking different skin thing. i for one hate twit skins but maybe i'm stupid (in the eyes of twits) and have a totally horrible taste.
but oh well, there are skins that aren;t even SKINS. gosh.

Hmm..
There are many probs.
I'll state one.
If the person creates multiple accs, and wanted one of his or her skin to become the SOTD,
he or she will self fave it err pull up the rating. And end up having a high chance getting the SOTD.
And some ppl might use ppl and so called "autofave".

you know what would be an easier way?
rate layouts HONESTLY.
skinners rate others 5stars just because he/she is in the friend's list or he/she is famous despite the fact that there are many flaws. They are not honest about their comments and rate them 5 so that theyll get the same to their skins too. If skinners actually rate as harshly and comment as straightforward as what they do to %LittleMissxinER&'s skins, im pretty sure the SOTD standard would be much better. Also, we should learn to accept this kind of comments so that we can improve. Dont revenge-rate them like "you rate me 4stars?!?!? I shall rate 0.5 then!!!!" Thats seriously stupid.

Agreed.
5 stars means top quality. 5 stars means that there are no major flaws and only a few minor ones. 5 stars is the type of rating accompanied by a "nice!" and no other comment, because it speaks for itself.
But so many skins have so many flaws - they are pixellated, the font size is too small, the colour scheme is lousy. All these could be commented on. I know I don't make good skins. The pic is the only thing I'm good at: my HTML skills suck. So I know a lot of my skins don't deserve their 5-star ratings.
Yet it seems that only rippers' skins and the really stupid ones (e.g. no content at all, nonsensical HTML tags, just a pic) get rated down. 4.5 ratings are considered "rating down" because they pull the average score down - but think about it, which is the average score supposed to reflect, your actual skin or some distorted idealised "perfect skin"?
People need suggestions to improve. Unrealistic 5-star ratings inflate people's egos and give them a false picture of the quality of their skins. They become complacent, pointing to their computer screens and declaring, "SEE? I DON'T NEED TO IMPROVE ANY MORE, ALL MY SKINS ARE 5 STARS!" The result is that the person stagnates and produces a mass of mediocre skins without ever rising to a different standard. The more skinners this happens to, the worse SOTD standard will be.
The usual rebuttal to 4.5-star comments is "YOU CAN DO BETTER MEH?" That misses the point entirely. I know I can't do better. That's why I'm not SOTD. Doesn't mean you should be. If we all learn to accept criticism and eradicate the mentality of rate-me-5-stars-or-else, then we should soon see the SOTD standard improving.

Sometimes I think it's really the popularity that wins SOTD. But you can't totally blame the sotd system. I really think it's impressions that people make.

Agreed, the SOTD system has no way to decide a SOTD other than using statistics and figures. If these statistics and figures do not reflect true popularity, it's not exactly the system's fault.

Previous SOTD's used to be skins that are so pretty.
You can actually compare the difference between previous and current SOTD's and see the difference, or should i say great difference.
We need beautiful skins for SOTD!

i also think that it is the number of stars that counts. perhaps the unique downloaded number too, im not sure.
actually, the SOTD skins are (i guess) chosen by people who comment. like the stars, or the downloads, or the favourites, i think its somehow 'chose' by other skinners. Sometimes, well, really! SOTDs are not really up to standard, but it depends, actually.
There are alot of beauutiful skins out there, so skinners, please comment properly! Thats about it, this is CRAP!! xD

i agree with w1k143va 's comment.i have had people telling me my colour scheme/codes isnt appropriate but still give me 5 stars.seriously speaking,i dont see why people should hanker after 5 stars.afterall,we upload skins for other people's use,so what if you gain 5 minutes of fame?
so,i too,beseech all blogskinners to be a lil more harsh with their rating but not too harsh

I totally agree, we should really rate people honestly! No more 4.5 stars because it's downright undeserving, just rate your true feelings- I'm sure the blogskinners whose skins are being rated would understand.
This way, besides averaging skin ratings a bit (instead of alllll skins getting 4.89 stars or 4.9 stars etc), there will be a greater range of ratings and blogskin pickers will know which skins are more deserving. At the moment, the rating system isn't really doing much besides serving as a feel-good factor for skinners who want to get their skins rated as perfectly as possible- which is completely defeating its purpose.
